Our Historical Building - The James Lick Baths/ People's Laundry, located on the east side of 10th Street between Mission and Howard Streets. Assessor's Block 3509, Lot 14. The subject property is a one- and two-story brick building, with a brick tower, built in 1890 by the Estate of James Lick as a public bath house, and rebuilt in 1906 in the Renaissance Revival style and closed as a public bath
in 1919.
In 1920 the Tsukamoto Family opened the People's Laundry in the building, a family business until 1973. Consideration to initiate landmark designation, approval of landmark designation to the Planning Commission of 165 10th Street as Landmark No. 246. The building survived the earthquake of 1906 as shown in the photos and was refurbished consistently with the original architectural plan, and remains a beautiful reminder of the colorful history of the area. It was originally built as a free public bath that offered bathing to those who could not afford it at a time when it was needed by the general population.
